Summary / Abstract:

ENThe issue of synonymy in terminology is both relevant and enduring. It is important from a theoretical perspective, as it raises questions about why and how the same concept may be named differently and what regularities govern such naming, as well as from a practical perspective, as it involves decisions about which synonym to choose and in which context. Terminological synonymy is significant for professional communication and beyond, including knowledge transfer and systematisation, the representation of terminological data, translation, and editing. The object of this monograph is Lithuanian-language terms with different formal realisations that have identical or very close meanings and designate the same concept, that is, synonyms. After reviewing the diversity of approaches to synonyms and variants, the introduction explains why the concepts of synonym and synonymy, rather than variant and variation, were adopted. This choice is grounded in the tradition of Lithuanian terminology, as well as in the treatment of derivational and grammatical synonyms and related considerations. The study aims to reveal the nature and diversity of synonymous nomination in Lithuanian terminology by examining terminology management practices and the similarities and differences among synonymous terms. To achieve this aim, the following objectives are set: 1) to discuss the place and role of synonymous terms within the terminology management system; 2) to identify the factors and motives that determine the inclusion or exclusion of synonyms in normative terminological resources; 3) to empirically demonstrate that standardisation does not necessarily lead to a reduction in the number of synonyms; 4) to reveal differences in the degree of semantic distance between synonyms; 5) to identify the linguistic mechanisms that account for variation in the number of synonyms’ constituents.6) to examine and highlight the characteristics and interrelationships of terminological synonyms outside the boundaries of scientific discourse. The material and sources of the empirical research presented in this monograph are of several types. To address issues of terminological synonymy related to terminology management (Tasks 1–3), the study analyses synonyms of standards selected from the Standard Terms Database of Lithuanian Standards Board and from the Term Bank of the Republic of Lithuania, as well as comments on synonym-related issues recorded in the minutes of discussions on terminological dictionary manuscripts held by the Terminology Sub-Commission of the State Commission of the Lithuanian Language (VLKK) between 2010 and 2022. To address Tasks 4–5, terminographic data are employed: synonyms are drawn from two recent large terminological dictionaries – the Explanatory Dictionary of Psychology Terms (PsichŽ, 2019) and the glossary Lithuanian–English Dictionary of Librarianship, Information and Book Science (BIK, 2021). To accomplish Task 6, data from the Lithuanian Web Corpus 2014 (ltTenTen14) are used. From this corpus, synonyms connected by metalinguistic markers were extracted from a subcorpus consisting of two websites. Accordingly, the principal sources of the monograph fall into three categories: structured terminological resources (terminological standards, terminological sections of standards, and terminological dictionaries), minutes of terminological discussions, and a corpus. [...] The monograph consists of two main parts: (1) Synonyms and Terminology Management and (2) Interrelationships Between Synonyms. Together, they comprise six chapters, with three chapters in each part. The first part addresses issues related to the management of synonyms in terminology, while the second focuses on the interrelationships among synonymous terms. The discussion begins with terminology management rather than with synonymic relationships, as it was considered methodologically appropriate to first address the evaluation of synonyms in terminology, where they are often stereotypically regarded as a drawback, and only subsequently to examine the regularities and specific features of terminological synonymy. In addition, the interrelationships between terms are analysed primarily based on “managed” terminology, that is, terminographic data and, presumably, edited texts. [...].
