Rinkinyje skelbiamų tyrimų konteksto išsami apžvalga leidžia pamatyti šio leidinio publikacijų novatoriškumą, indėlį į XIX a. antros pusės – XX a. pirmos pusės moterų istorijos tyrimus.

ENIn this introductory article, the authors review the historical and lit erary research carried out from 1990 to the present day on the nineteenth- and early twentieth-century women’s history and literature. First, the works and activities of Vytautas Kavolis, Viktorija Daujotytė, and Karla Gruodis, who inspired the engagement in women’s studies in the 1990s, are presented. Then, the authors introduce chronologically the works of Lithuanian historiography devoted to the history of women’s education, revealing how women’s contribution rectifies the formation of national ideology, and bringing to light new per sonalities. The historiographical survey is followed by a presentation of literary works on women’s literature of the nineteenth and early twentieth century. This part of the article focuses on studies dedicated to nineteenth-century women writers, as well as those that have begun to analyze the rich women’s literature at the turn of the century from a woman’s perspective. It highlights the striking decline in the quantity of women’s literature and their studies between the wars, and discusses the reasons for this. In the conclusions, the authors relate the articles in this collection to the context of women’s history and literary studies as outlined. The articles in the first part of the collection pay attention to the history of women’s contribution, while the articles in the second part focus on the issue of women’s representation in culture and literary works. The articles in the third part of the collection analyzes the works of women writers of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and biographical studies based on updated methodological approaches. The themes and the chosen methodological approaches in the collection also allow the authors of introduction to formulate perspectives for further research on women’s history. We still lack theoretical works that would reconsider the limits of the theoretical assumptions of traditional science, analysis of the entire literary discourse from a female perspective, and studies on the history and representation of sexuality in literature. Keywords: women’s history, feminism, emancipation, literature, women’s work, egodocuments.
