ENFar from simply relating the events that led from the decline of the Russian Empire to the emergence of the Lithuanian independent state, Gabrielė Petkevičaitė’s „Wartime Diary“ synthesizes the crisis that occurred between herself and the new world which the war was creating. On the one hand, the war made the Lithuanian writer focus on the double dimension of time which mirrored the contraposition between a feminine world, characterized by care-taking, and a masculine world responsible for the violence of warfare and the inconclusiveness of politics. Violence drove Petkevičaitė to search for the strength to react to war events in her own interiority. In particular, the protective instinct of maternity stimulated her to make sense of wartime by focusing upon and acting in favour of the real victims of the events - children, sick people, and soldiers. Her awareness of the clear divergence between the „private“ and feminine dimension of ethics, and the unethical and masculine dimension of politics caused Petkevičaitė to refuse any mediation between them and to withdraw from active political life.
