EN"A Lazy Woman", a short story by the Lithuanian writer Žemaitė (pen name for Julija Beniuševičiūtė-Žymantienė, 1845-1921), has not attracted much attention by Lithuanian critics since - its first publication in 1902. Most critics describe it in terms of social criticism against landowners and their exploitation of peasants, as it presents a vivid contrast between a peasant woman, overwhelmed by the conflicting demands of small children and her work on the estate, and the lady of the estate, pampered and egotistical. The story can also be read as one of a series that presents in coded form Žemaitė's own protest against the hardships of her life after marrying below her rank. A more interesting approach, however, and one that links Žemaitė with many other European women writers of her time, is one that focuses on the hysterical attacks that both women in the story suffer under the pressure of their restricted lives. Žemaitė emphasizes the bodies of both her peasant and her upper-class woman, drawing a strong parallel between the two through that most typical of late 19 th century women's illnesses, hysteria.
