ENMonograph “The Ideas of Education Science for Modernisation of the Lithuanian Education System” is a collective three-year work of the research group in education science of Kaunas University of Technology (KTU). This work was accomplished in 1995-1997, when it was decided to start investigation of the problems of the contemporary education science and to search for their solutions which are so necessary for modernisation of the Lithuanian education system. This monograph covers the works of 34 authors. These works have been specially written for this book or selected from various other publications, mostly periodicals. Lithuania is the country the main resource of which are people. If their ability to act met the modern world demands, Lithuania would be as rich by human capital as the developed Western countries. Taking into account that human resources become one of the key growth factor of any country, their development is the strategic objective for Lithuania. Solution of this problem requires creation of theoretical foundations, first of all relying on the possibilities of education science. This book focuses on the concepts of life-long education and continuing education. In methodological sense, by enriching the concept of continuing education with managerial concept of self-learning organisation, the education system as the research object of education science is expanded far beyond the boundaries of its classical understanding. This is particularly important when looking the perspective of Lithuanian people in the context of the knowledge society. The foundation of the Department of Pedagogy by professor Andrius Novodvorskis in the former Kaunas Polytechnic Institute in 1962 can be considered as the origin of the research group in education of KTU. Dr. L. Šiaučiukėnienė, who has been working there since the very foundation, for as long as three decades is investigating the problems of university didactics, has created the theory of differentiated teaching and has written a monograph on this topic “Teaching Individualisation and Differentiation”. She was the supervisor and consultant of 7 candidate dissertations in pedagogy. One of them was defended by the editor and the compiler of this book P. Jucevičienė whose further research was focused on the modern didactic system - modular teaching. Her research was summarised in the monograph “Theory and Practice of Modular Teaching” (Jucevičienė, 1989). In 1990 the researcher defended doctoral (currently called habilitated doctor’s) dissertation in Vilnius University. She was a supervisor of 3 candidate and 6 doctoral (in modern degree system) dissertations. Reestablishment of independence has opened possibilities for the development of social sciences. Pedagogy has experienced a qualitative leap into education science.which integrates the possibilities of other social sciences and focuses on individual’s education and self-education as well as the education systems. Research on the problems of education was started in the broad context of education science, philosophy, management, sociology and information science. Department of Management in Social Systems of KTU became a favourable environment for the development of the research group propagating a new attitude towards education science. At present the research group includes 3 professors, habilitated doctors (P. Jucevičienė - leader of the group, V. Jakavičius, K. Kardelis), one retired professor (L. Jovaiša), 13 associated professors, doctors (B. Grebliauskienė, D. Vyšniauskienė, I. Leliūgienė, I. Mačerinskienė, L. Šermukšnytė, L. Šiaučiukėnienė, N. Večkienė, R. Minkutė, R. Petrauskas, V. Baršauskienė, V. Chreptavičienė, V. Kundrotas, V. Targamadze), 19 doctoral students and 5 external students.
