Summary / Abstract:

ENThe article seeks to give an answer to the question of how modern higher education must act to become an agent of social innovations in society. How is higher education to keep the function of “the core of society”? The article accentuated the importance of social innovations within the context of the country’s transformation especially when this is taking place in the post-totalitarian society. Open and hidden aspects of such transformation are accentuated as cultural modality, division of the community, cultural and social exclusion, etc. It is within this context that the ratio of social innovations to material technical innovations is revealed. The article proposes a conceptual approach of how to treat higher education that it should acquire features of the agent of social innovations. In this respect the fact that higher education is becoming a mass phenomenon is regarded as attempts to draw every citizen in the creation and application of knowledge when a changing social situation creates new needs and interests. The treatment of higher education is based on interaction of the following conceptions: liberal education, democratic higher education, a university of continuous education and services. Such integration of conceptions enables one to look at higher education as the most important condition of optimising the quality of life in the post-totalitarian society.
