Summary / Abstract:

ENThis article analyses the functioning of Catholic Church confraternities in the dioceses of Vilnius and Samogitia (Telšiai) in the 19th century, and in particular, after the 1863–1864 Uprising. After this Uprising, the Catholic Church was persecuted in the dioceses operating within the administrative boundaries of the so-called Northwest Region (Minsk, Vilnius1 and Samogitia (Telšiai)2). Government measures were also enforced on Church confraternities: in his circular dated 20 April 1868, the governor-general of Vilnius Aleksandr Potapov ordered all Church confraternities to be closed down. It is important to note that the application of the order in this circular was postponed for the Kaunas Province, or the Samogitian (Telšiai) Diocese,3 by verbal agreement between the local and central administration. Nonetheless, in the final decades of the 19th century, the question of closing the confraternities in the Diocese of Samogitia (Telšiai) was continuously raised by the local administration. However, the process of their closure was protracted. It can even be said that after the 1863–1864 Uprising the confraternities’ activities did not cease, but their opportunities for expression and the nature of the activities did change.I have determined the changes to expressions of piety in the confraternities that came about due to the changing context of the spread of the Church’s teachings in the 19th century. My analysis of the functioning of Church confraternities in the 19th century shows that they were sensitive social structures that were affected by cultural, political and social processes in society and in the Church overall. The confraternities’ activities in the 19th century underwent a transformation, and their structure lost specific functions. Structures displaying new forms of piety formed from local communities and related groups, news of which reached the dioceses via channels of information transfer that were illegal in the government’s view. These were more convenient for the mobile person with a more individualised experience of piety (the nurturing of which was aided by none other than the confraternities). Keywords: Church confraternity, Diocese of Vilnius, Diocese of Samogitia (Telšiai).
