Summary / Abstract:

LTStraipsnyje pasiremiant istoriniu lyginamuoju metodu nagrinėjamos tradicijos sampratos, apibrėžtos XX a. antrosios pusės ir XXI a. pradžios mokslininkų bei atskleistos pasitelkus šiuolaikinį miesto jaunimą.

ENThis article employs historical comparative method and analyses the perception of traditions, defined by scientists of the second half of the 20th c. and the beginning of the 21st c. and revealed with the help of nowadays urban youth. The article is based on material collected in 2011 by the students of Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences on ethnographic field research “Tradition the 21st c.” (33 men and 53 women were interviewed in Vilnius city). During the Soviet times and after the restoration of the Independence in the works of Lithuanian ethnologists the understanding of tradition epitomising value / power were changing but not necessarily transferred and intercepted from generation to generation. Ethnographic research field stressed the difference in the modern culture between the scientific thought and opinion given by modern youth. The research has revealed different definitions of tradition and custom, the explanation on what part of society support them also differs. The “small” (family) and “large” (nation) interpretations of traditions could be distinguished. The absolute majority of the respondents believe that traditions and customs are transferred from generation to generation orally in the family. Many of them said that internet and other media sources are only auxiliary source of knowledge. The results have shown that urban youth have quite a conservative point of view towards almost unchanging traditions transferred from generation to generations, similar to S. Yla conceptions, but a bit different from modern and changing perception of European ethnologists. The opinion of young and educated respondents allowed us to look at expression of tradition in a changing context of tradition transfer, revealed their devotion to traditions and need to continue them.
