ENThis monograph represents the first leterary study of the prose works of Lithuanian author Ričardas Gavelis (1950-2002). Without Gavelis's oeuvre, it would be imposible to imagine the literary landscape of late twentieth-century Lithuania - not merely its prose fiction, but indeed the entire cultural and social milieu of the period. Gvelis's creative trajectory and fate are inextricably tied to the political, social, and cultural transformations of Lithuania. His finest hour coincided with Lithuania's resurgence as an indeoendent state, which was formally recognised by the Act of the Re-Establishment of the State of Lithuania on 11 March 1990. Written 'for the drawer' between 1979 and 1987, yet ultimately in November 1989 following the fall of the Berlin Wall, Vilniaus pokeris (Vilnius Poker) - Gavelis's most renowed and accomplished novel - not only marked the dawn of a new era of contemporary, independent Lithuanian literature but also inscribed itself into the annals of liberation processes. [...] This book offers a comprehensive account of Gavelis's entire body of prose, seeking to demonstrate how a talented physicist became a talented writer, how physicist's intellect donned the garb of words and images, and how Gavelis's prose system - the grand construction of this creative legacy - came into being. The book is composed of several layers, with the primary focus on analysis and interpretation of Gavelis;s prose corpus (both published works and unpublished manuscripts). This is supplemented by discussion of the writer's letters and notes, preserved in the archive. Thebook alsooutlines, for the first time, a history of Gavelis's critical reception. He skilfully critiqued society and diagnosed its alls, and the book performs important work, here, in revealing how society - or ar least one of its distinctive echelons, namely literary critics - responded to Gvelis's works and how his texts were read by.Contemporary evaluations of Gavelis's works - of which only the most characteristic are cited and discussed - demonstrate both how Gavelis's reputation took shape within the literary field and how the writer himself cultivated his own image.
