Summary / Abstract:

ENArticle examines the results of the experimental investigation of diphthong syllable accents in the Marijampolė sub-dialect. The pitch and intensity features of acute and circumflex diphthongs were subjected to experimental analysis. The results of the experimental investigation of the Marijampolė sub-dialect are compared with the parallel researches in Šakiai and Prienai sub-dialects. According to the results of the investigation, the pitch of the acute diphthongs is lower, but the range of pitch is larger. The most important feature of syllable accents is the time of the rise of the main pitch peak. The pitch of acuted syllables peaks in the first part of the pronunciation of the diphthong, while in the circumflexed syllables that occurs in the second half of the diphthong. The pitch curves of acuted diphthongs are much varied than those of circumflexed ones. The features of intensity are less important to the differentiation of diphthong syllable accents in the Marijampolė sub-dialect. According to the importance of the pitch features of the syllable accents the Marijampolė sub-dialect stands in the medium position between Šakiai and Prienai subdialects. [From the publication]
