Atsižvelgiant į inteligentijos sąvokos konceptualizavimo sudėtingumą, straipsnyje pagrindinis dėmesys skiriamas inteligentijos sąvokos reikšminiam turiniui viešajame diskurse, už tyrimo ribų paliekant inteligentijos socialinės ir profesinės struktūros, politinio, tautinio ir sociokultūrinio aktyvumo klausimus, asmeninės patirties atvejus. ENThe article examines women’s texts in the general public discourse of intelligentsia in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, in order to see what meanings were given to the term “intelligentsia” by the women who participated in the public debate, whether it is possible to talk about a separate image of the female intelligentsia, when women begin to perceive themselves as intellectuals, and when they discover the activities that are typical of female intelligentsia. A separate discussion focuses on women’s evaluations, the content and the genealogy of the formation of evaluations. The methodology of public discourse analysis, combined with the critical discourse analysis and the analytical approaches of discourse theory developed by Ernest Laclau and Chantal Mouffe, which reveal the links between group formation and discourse, is used in the study. The main source of the research is the Lithuanian periodical press and published works of fiction, which, more than letters or diaries, reflect the collective thinking of the intelligentsia, and, most importantly, show the reflection of ideas, the context of their dissemination, and allow us to assess, at least partially, the impact of those ideas. Given the complexity of conceptualizing the concept of intelligentsia, the article focuses on the content of the concept of intelligentsia in public discourse, leaving outside the issues of the social and professional structure of the intelligentsia, also political, national and sociocultural activism, and cases of personal experiences. Keywords: intelligentsia, public discourse, identity, women’s social role.
