Summary / Abstract:

EN[...] This book aims to investigate the features and dynamics of the relations of minority religions with Lithuanian society and the state by applying a socio-historical perspective and assesing ongoing processes in the framework of religious diversity's theoretical and empirical discussions. Questions were raised about the features of the relations between minority religious and Soviet Lithuanian society and its institutions, how these relations altered with the political regime change, as well as how the relations of minority religions with the state changed after the sociopolitical transformations in the last decade of the 20th century. This research is not historiographical; its purpose is to use historical facts testifying to the relations of minority religions with the state and society in the Soviet period and contemporary Lithuania and then to provide their sociological interpretation in the theoretical field of religious diversity. The triangulation of research methods was applied to achieve this goal. An analysis of scientific literature was applied to reveal the problem of religious diversity in contemporary society, to dicuss the peculiarities of the relationship between religion and democratic or authoritarian states, and to analyze and summarize the existing research on minority religions in Lithuania. A documents analysis method was used to analyze archival and recent documents, including legislation the legal acts, revealing the relations between minority religions and the state in the Soviet period as well as in contemporary Lithuania. During the empirical research in 2020-2021, 17 semi-structured interviews with members of minority religions were conducted, including members of the Evangelical Baptist, Evangelical Pentecostal, and Jehovah's Witnesses communities. [...].The analysis of the relations between minority religions, society, and the state in Soviet and contemporary Lithuania showed that the regime of religious diversity was formed by the Soviet government, which implemented an ideology hostile to religion. These measures led to the atomization of the field of religion, which manifested in the practically non-existent cooperation of religious communities to oppose the regime and the privatization of religion. After the socio-political changes of the end of the 20th century, the state of Lithuania, which created the religion-friendly ideology of religious pluralism, took over the management of the diversity of religions. However, the hierarchical pluralism formed led to the marginalization of religious minorities in public life. The fragmentation of the field of religion manifested in the exclusion and mRGINlization of minority religions and partly their self-isolation. These processes were also reflected in the attitudes of Lithuanian society towards minority religions over the period 2007-2021, which remained quite negative and can be associated with the residents' relatively poor knowledge of these groups and their contoversial prtrayal in the media.
