Summary / Abstract:

ENThe results and conclusions of complex scientific studies play an important role in the long-term preservation of the heritage of fine arts of Lithuania. Objective stocktaking of the country’s heritage of fine arts, as well as identification of qualitative and quantitative characteristics of these resources would not be possible without an extensive theoretical and physical analysis of the objects. In Lithuania, systematic inventorying of objects of the heritage of fine arts dates back to the Soviet period, approximately to the 1970s. Censorship created an unfavourable situation for the objects of fine arts representing Catholic themes and decorating local Catholic churches – it is exactly these types of objects that comprise the largest and most valuable part of the heritage of fine arts. Lithuanian independence reestablished in 1990 was a turning point for the research of fine arts and heritage protection. While the local system of heritage protection has been modernized and expanded on the basis of the best international practices, it continues to rely on the list of protected cultural objects that was compiled in the Soviet period. The fundamental research of objects of fine arts has undergone radical changes. The objects of the heritage of fine arts dating back to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania have received considerably more attention, and the network of scholarly institutions exploring the early fine arts of Lithuania has expanded. As the stocktaking of the objects of fine arts in Lithuania was not completed before 1990, much attention has been given to this process. During the process of registering the inventory on the territorial basis (diocese by diocese), a large amount of data on the extent and value of the surviving heritage of fine arts has been collected.
