Summary / Abstract:

ENThe article deals with the accentuation of adjectives in the Punskas subdialect that dialectologists have so far devoted little attention. Our goal is to analyse, drawing on the ample material from the 2013-2015 sound recordings and written sources, the accentuation of the adjectives of this local dialect, to establish the tendencies of the accentuation of adjectives characteristic of this subdialect as well as to reveal the similarities and differences between the adjective accentuation in this local dialect and the neighbouring Southern Aukštaitian dialect. The detailed analysis of the material provided by the sound recordings and written sources of the Punskas subdialect and the Southern Aukštaitias' dialects (especially of the neighbouring south-western ones) that was carried out demonstrated that the adjectives of the subdialect analysed have a stronger tendency to more accentuation variants than other subdialects of the Southern Aukštaitian dialect. The accentuation variations of two-syllable adjectives are linked to the retention of old acute accent relics (the singular instrumental and plural accusative forms of the acute root at the end of the о stem) or their disappearance (the singular nominative forms stressed in the root of the и stem). The tendency to put oxytone stress in the words discussed and their forms can be also determined by the accented ending of words that prevail in the Punskas subdialect - the dominating oxytone accentuation of declined words. The different accentuation of two-syllable adjectives is explained by the analogy of the accentuation of the same type derivatives, the formation of the two-type accent model and the influence of the accentuation system of the Polish language; it is also connected with the semantics of derivatives, different accentuation of root words and their forms and the retention of the old forms (root or suffix accent). The research into the Punskas local dialect suggests that number of old root or ending stressed forms in the Southern Aukštaitian marginal subdialects is larger than anywhere else. Therefore, it can be presumed that the number of cases of the old accent in the Southern Aukštaitian area decreases from the south-western direction to the South. [From the publication]
