ENArticle reveals the iconography of the miraculous Pažaislis painting of the Virgin Mary with Baby Jesus and discusses the circumstances of the formation of its iconographic type. The article analyses the primary image of this iconographic type - the Madonna in a garland of flowers painting ordered by the Milanese cardinal Federico Borromeo (1564-1631), and created by the Flemish artist duo of Jan Brueghel the Elder (1568-1625) and Hendrick van Balen (1575-1632). Other examples of this iconographic type are examined in brief as well. The research aims to define the importance of this iconographic type in the context of 17th c. art, describing the phenomena of cultural life leading to its formation: the flourishing of the still life genre, the start of collecting artworks, closely associated with the tradition of kunstkamera, and the baroque flower parks that sparked the collecting and scientific categorising of plants. When discussing the iconographic type of Madonna in a garland of flowers, the question of the Virgin Mary worship is raised, and of the reasons of this type's distinctiveness and popularity. The research also describes the history of the miraculous Pažaislis painting of the Virgin Mary with Baby Jesus and its follow up paintings in the Lithuanian Grand Duchy. [From the publication]
