Summary / Abstract:

ENThe article analyses statistical distribution of phonemes in initial, middle and ending syllables of the standard Lithuanian language. When analysing frequencies of phonemes in the standard Lithuanian, it was noticed that statistical distribution of phonemes is usually determined by the type of the morpheme. Certain phonemes there appear more frequently than in the stem. Not only frequencies of phonemes of the stem, the suffix and the ending, but also phoneme inventors of those morphemes differ. One of the key factors determining the frequency of phonemes is their position in the word. Long syllables are more frequent than short ones, but long sounds are used more rarely than short ones, therefore, short sounds dominate in the final stressed syllable, whereas, long sounds dominate among unstressed sounds in this position. All the above observations encouraged the analysis of the frequency of phonemes in the syllable related to its position in the word, and search for more specific statistical factors, which can prove or deny the tendencies primarily observed. Coherent texts, i.e. extracts from works of Lithuanian prose, were used as the material for research. The article analyses quantitative distribution of syllables in the word, relative frequencies of vowels and consonants and relative frequencies of all phonemes. The research has revealed that “non-standard” frequency of certain phonemes in endings directly or indirectly influences the development of those endings. This would explain why unstressed absolute endings -ė, -o almost always shortened by certain residents of the Upper Lithuania, which is usually a rare phenomenon for this dialect.
