Summary / Abstract:

ENThe article summarizes previous research on the relations between Protestants and Orthodox Christians in Vilnius. It turns out that in the 16th and 17th centuries, the main division among the city’s Christian inhabitants was still the one between Christians of the Eastern and Western rites. The development of the Reformation in the 16th century and even the introduction of the Union of Brest in 1596 didn’t change this. Although due to the developing Counter-Reformation, non-Catholics were exposed to various attacks from Catholics, this didn’t result in wider cooperation and contacts between the Orthodox and Protestant bourgeoisie in the city. However, the Protestant nobility and magnates, led by the Radziwiłł family from the Calvinist branch from Birże, were involved in helping the persecuted Orthodox inhabitants of Vilnius. Based on available sources, it is only possible to confirm intensive contacts between the Orthodox brotherhood of Vilnius and the Radziwiłłs from Birże. Keywords: Orthodoxy, the Ruthenians, the Uniates, Protestantism, the Orthodox Brotherhood of Vilnius, bourgeoisie, Vilnius.
