Summary / Abstract:

Disertacijos tyrimo objektu pasirinkta Žemaičių vyskupija ir joje XVI a. 8-ame deš.–XVII a. viduryje vykę procesai. Disertacijoje gausu priedų – išlikusių vyskupijos XVII a. I pusės vizitacijų tekstų sąvadas; Žemaičių vyskupų itinerariumai; vyskupijos parapijų ir dekanatų sąrašai; Rietavo dekanato dokumentai; 1576–1649 m. minimų vyskupijos dvasininkų biogramos. ENThe examination of Christian history is a very important task in Lithuanian historiography, for it unfolds the historical processes of society, culture, and art and helps to grasp their significance. The dissertation’s object is the Samogitian diocese and the processes that were happening in it from the 8th decade of the 17th c. to the middle of 17th c. The study of the Catholic Reform is divided into two parts: the episcopate of Merkelis Giedraitis (1576–1609) and the work of his successors (1609–1649). The aims of the dissertation are the following: 1) to appraise the work and the contribution of the bishops to the reform of episcopate; 2) to delineate the course of the disciplinary reform and to identify the changes; 3) to identify the results of the clergy’s development and education reform; 4) to define the priorities of priest’s office and changes related to its prestige; 5) to examine the ways in which congregational and missionary soul care was organized; 6) to examine the phenomena of prayer practice, to assess the role of fraternities and the character of the Reform’s piety; 7) to examine the activities of monastic communities in a diocese; 8) to identify the role of laity in the reform of diocese; 9) to delineate the impact of the Catholic Reform on the region. The dissertation contains plenty of appendixes: the synopsis of the surviving texts about the Episcopal visitations from the 1st half of the 17th c., the itineraries of the Samogitian bishops, the lists of parishes and deaneries, the documents of the Rietavas’ deanery, the biograms of the bishopric’s clergy mentioned in 1576 – 1649.
