ENA family’s duty is to protect and ensure the right development for the child and protect the child’s interests; otherwise, the state gets involved to ensure the child’s rights and takes all measures to ensure that the child’s rights are not violated. After a child is taken from an unsafe environment, the state looks for relatives who could temporarily provide safety for the children. If relatives are not found, attention turns to the care centres and the on-call guardians working in them. According to the modern concept, childcare priority is given to members of one’s family. The purpose of temporary custody is to return the child to the family. In order to increase the number of guardians on duty, it is important to analyse what motivates guardians to undertake a specific activity and what the need for help is during the guardianship process. This could help create support systems that motivate individuals to become caregivers. The object of the study is the experiences of guardians on duty in the process of childcare. The purpose of the study is to reveal the experiences of on-duty guardians in the guardianship process. Tasks of the research: 1) describe the motivation and readiness of the guardian on duty; 2) describe the process of preparing to become on-call caregivers; 3) describe the support received and needed for the on-duty guardian in the guardianship process. The qualitative research was based on constructivist ontology and interpretive epistemology. Seven on-duty caregivers participated in the study. The study revealed that internal and external motives motivated the research participants to start the activity of becoming a guardian on duty such as altruism, professional vocation, painful childhood experiences, an empty home, and the desire to improve the relationship with their biological daughter. The study revealed that the opportunity to participate in the child’s life by showing him that family life can be more beautiful is a motive to continue the activities of on-call caregivers. The research revealed that all guardians on duty must attend PRIDE training, which they consider useful but notice that they lack practical experience. The study revealed that on-call caregivers respond to the needs of the children in their care but face a variety of challenges, from the children’s behaviour and health problems to the state’s institutions’ negative attitudes, financial difficulties, and professional “burnout”. The research revealed that on-call guardians receive support from close people, colleagues, and specialists in various fields who advise, provide emotional support, mediate, and organise various trainings and mutual support groups. Based on the research data, the paper presents recommendations for foster care centres, the state child rights protection and adoption service, city municipalities, the Ministry of Social Security and Labour, and future social work researchers. Keywords: guardian on duty, child in foster care, care process. [From the publication]
