Summary / Abstract:

LTLietuva ir Lenkija, kur nuo 1565 m. jėzuitai pradėjo savo plėtros procesą, XVI a. antrojoje pusėje Apaštališkajam sostui tapo svarbiu dėmesio objektu dėl keleto religinių ir politinių priežasčių. Visų pirma, LDK ir Lenkijoje nuo XVI a. penktojo dešimtmečio aktyviai plėtojosi Reformacija. 1555 m. pabaigoje į Lietuvą ir Lenkiją buvo pasiųstas pirmasis popiežiaus nuncijus, Veronos vyskupas Luigis Lippomanas, kurio pagrindinė misija turėjo būti LDK Reformacijos lyderio kunigaikščio Mikalojaus Radvilo Juodojo sugrąžinimas į Romos bažnyčią ir kelio galimai valstybės vadovo Žygimanto Augusto konversijai į protestantizmą užkirtimas. Misijoje dalyvavo ir pirmasis Vilniuje apsilankęs jėzuitas Alfonsas Salmerónas, kuris laiškuose savo bičiuliui Ignacui Loyolai jėzuitų įsikūrimo Lietuvoje galimybes įvertino kaip beveik neįmanomas. Tačiau aplinkybės sparčiai keitėsi: Žygimanto Augusto ryžtas įgyvendinti valstybines religines reformas išsikvėpė, o 1565 m. gegužę mirus Radvilui Juodajam ir Reformacijos stovyklai praradus savo ambicingiausią ir galingiausią globėją, jėzuitų veiklos perspektyvos Lietuvoje palengvėjo. Antra, LDK, kurios teritorijoje kirtosi Vakarų ir Rytų krikščionybės tradicijos, vėl tapo priemone Apaštališkajam sostui gaivinant seną, nuo Florencijos susirinkimo (1430 m.) puoselėtą Vakarų ir Rytų bažnyčios unijos idėją. Trečia, Šventajam sostui kuriant kovos prieš islamą aljansą, sėkminga Lietuvos ir Lenkijos valdovo Stepono Batoro karinė politika teikė vilčių paversti LDK vienu pagrindinių kovos prieš turkus frontų. Visi šie aspektai lėmė ir jėzuitų veiklos bei ideologijos ypatumus regione. Politines užduotis jėzuitai derino su kontrreformacinėmis ir jas įgyvendino tiek diplomatinėmis, tiek edukacinėmis priemonėmis. ENThe article deals with the issues of the Jesuit educational strategy in Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the period of the Stephen Báthory and their collaboration with the ruler, as well as discuses the main features of the Jesuit literature in which the image of the Stephen Báthory was presented. Even the Jesuits started their activity in Polish-Lithuanian union in 1565, during the rule of Sigismund Augustus, the main and the biggest wave of the spread of the Jesuits in the region started thanks to the politics favourable to the Jesuits under the rule of King Stephen Báthory (1576–1586). Jesuit University at Vilnius and numerous colleges and seminaries founded in the region helped to raise a number of priests, writers and politicians that were successful combating the Reformation. During the reign of Stepen Báthory, the long generalate of Claudio Acquaviva (1581–1615) started. Acquaviva was not very enthusiastic regarding the permanent founding of the new centers of Jesuits in Poland-Lithuanian union because of the lack of active members. Notwithstanding, the main personalities that implemented the expansion of the new Jesuit centers were the Jesuits Antonio Possevino (1533/34–1611) and Giovanni Paolo Campana (1540–1592). Some local Jesuits, first of all Petrus Skarga, Krszystof Warszewicki and others, also became very active supporters of the process.Anyway, it is important to note that despite the King’s loyalty to the Jesuits and their educational strategy in Poland-Lithuanian union, closest fiduciaries of the King in the court were not Jesuits but some Protestants and even Antitrinitarians. This could affect some critical tendencies in the widespread funeral speech written by Warszewicki after the death of Báthory. The glory of Stephen Báthory’s triumph in the Livonian war against Russia and Ivan the Terrible was the main topics both in Jesuit and Protestant literature. Because of the educational and military politics in Lithuania, Báthory gained the name of Father of Vilnius and the image of the successor of the Grand Duke of Vytautas Magnus who managed to expand the territory of Grand Duchy of Lithuania from the Baltic to the Black seas.
