Summary / Abstract:

ENFunctional sentence perspective – the organization of a sentence in terms of the role of its elements in distinguishing between old and new information, the division of a sentence into theme and rheme – was one of the constituent parts of the project "Integrated Lithuanian language text prosodic analysis: intonation, rhythm and logical stress". The article is intended to provide the review of theoretical works on functional sentence perspective, to discuss the place of theme and rheme in a sentence of a written text, linking features, the relationship of theme and rheme with logical stress. The work is based on the rerecorded and annotated material of 35 hour recordings of texts in different styles. The analysis showed that the Lithuanian language texts are usually constructed using chainlinking, when the theme precedes the rheme (77 per cent of analysed sentences). Sentences, where the rheme precedes the theme, and incomplete, elliptical sentences that are considered to be the rheme represent 23 per cent of analysed sentences; the sentences of the latter model are more frequent in the texts of fiction, everyday style and dialogues. The typical linking devices are various kinds of repetition, pronoun change, words and phrases of generalising meaning. The theme-rheme distinction determined by the intention of the addresser and context is shown by the phrase pause. The key indictors of functional sentence perspective are direct and inverted word order and logical stress. The rheme usually contains a word or phrase with a logical stress. In sentences of direct word order the logical stress sometimes is the only indicator of the rheme. The logical stress also highlights the theme-rheme centre of longer sentences.
