Summary / Abstract:

ENThe education of leadership competencies at higher school has been chosen as an object of this work. It has been noticed that in recent years more and more attention has been paid for the issue concerning how students are trained for leadership; at the same time it has been searched for most effective methods and activities (Getz, 2009; Glatter, 2009; Stewart, 2009; Wells, 2010; Cox, Cekic, Adams, 2010; Sankar, Kawulich, Clayton, Raju, 2010; Hooper, 2010). The analysis of literature gave the opportunity to reason theoretically the influence of leadership competencies of teachers-mentors and mentors’ functions for the development of students’ leadership competencies. Empirical research was fulfilled to verify this assumption. The methodology of empirical research was created to analyze the correlation between leadership competencies of students and leadership competencies and mentor’s functions of mentors of their teaching practice. It has been proved that the leadership competencies of students are related with the functions implemented by mentors by a statistically significant and linear functional correlation. This correlation shows that students whose mentors during teaching practice have implemented career planning, psychosocial and role modelling functions better more frequently possess stronger leadership competencies. These research results complement to numerous research works (for example, M. B. Baxter Magolda (2001), L. Cummins (2004), A. Pollard (2006), K. Stankevičienė and O. Monkevičienė (2007), S. R. Komives (2005, 2009), G. Omatsu (2012) et al.) that reason the influence of a mentor on the achievements of students, but at the same time bring novelty as the linearity and significance of correlation between mentors’ functions and students’ leadership competencies has been revealed.Due to the insights occurred from the research results it becomes possible to form several recommendations for higher schools: • After the theoretical and empirical reasoning of the significance of teaching practice for the education of leadership competencies it is recommended to include into the descriptions of content of teaching practice not only the professional and general aspects, but also aspects of leadership education of leadership competencies; • Higher schools should create and maintain relations with the institutions providing practice for students based on partnership. By sharing positive experience, knowledge, and expectations students, practice supervisors at higher schools and mentors create appropriate conditions and environment for the successful education of competencies, including leadership ones.
