Summary / Abstract:

LTStraipsnyje nagrinėjami medžioklės ypatumai Lietuvos teritorijoje nuo vėlyvojo paleolito laikų iki XVI a.

ENThis paper analyses the characteristics of hunting in the Lithuanian territory from the Late Palaeolithic Age to the 16th century. The main used sources are zooarcheological, archeological and palynological data collected in excavated settlements and necropolises. The neolithisation, trade, natural conditions and the laws of the early Middle Ages affected the developments of hunting in Lithuania. Up until the Middle Bronze Age, hunting was the main branch of economics. While the role of hunting decreased during the Middle Neolithic Age, its influence on economics remained the same up until the early Middle Ages. The research revealed that the most hunted animal during the Late Palaeolithic Age was the reindeer, and the hunting area stretched along the strand of Nemunas and other major rivers. The hunting during the Early Mesolithic Age was affected by natural changes – trees overgrew the Lithuanian territory and regional animals pullulated the forests. The most hunted animals were moose, wild boars, beavers, aurochses, red deer, seals, and martens. The importance of hunting decreased during the Late Neolithic and Early Bronze Ages; however, red deer, wild boars, beaver, aurochses, moose, and seals were still hunted. The spectrum of hunted animals changed, and the number of bred and hunted animals almost evened during the Middle Bronze Age. During the Late Bronze and Early Iron Ages, hunting became less important than farming, and the hunted animals were wild boars, aurochses, and beavers. Minor furred animals mostly hunted during the migration period. The animals were mostly hunted around mounds while the country formed, and hunting became the privilege of noblemen during the Early Middle Ages.
