Summary / Abstract:

Reikšminiai žodžiai: Esė; Esė tradicija skirtingose kultūrose; Lietuvių esė; Metafora; Tekstas; Žanras; Essay; Genre; Lithuaniamn essay; Metaphor; Text; Tradition of essay in different cultures.

ENExamples of the essays published in 1990-2003 are analysed in the article, authors of which are scientists, while the contents of the essays are solution, criticism and philosophy of the problems in literature science. In the Lithuanian language, the basis of a traditional essay is formed by contemplation, bringing essay texts closer to the texts of scientific research style. But, traditional essay is distinguished from the scientific texts based on deductive and inductive formulation of ideas by inclusion of the alternative of the conventional mode of thinking, i.e. analogy, into the text. The result of analogue thinking in conventional essay texts is style figures. The most common of them are artistic comparison and metaphor, which are not found in scientific style texts. The key function of these figures of thought in essay texts is informative - through analogy a figure is created to give accurate expression of the features of the object discussed. Traditional essay texts are highly abundant in extensive comparisons containing all three structural elements of analogy, as well as extended or binary metaphors. Extended comparison and metaphor in the text are presented as a thesis, which is further deductively developed, or as a conclusion, reached through induction. Other functions, such as expressive and aesthetic, are secondary, arising at the result of comparison of different spheres, make the impression of unexpectedness, unconventionality, are associative. It is important that the latter figures help in revealing subjective attitude of the author to matters discussed. Informational function predominating in analogue thinking allows to consider traditional essay texts as scientific style texts with inclination to sub-style popularised by science.
