Summary / Abstract:

Reikšminiai žodžiai: Mokyklos direktorių nuostatos; Mokyklų vadovų požiūris; Mokytojų nuostatos; Mokytojų požiūris; Specialių poreikių mokinių ugdymas; Specialiųjų poreikių mokiniai; Ugdymas; Attitudes of headmasters; Attitudes of school headmasters; Attitudes of teachers; Education; Education of pupils with special needs; Pupils with special needs.

ENSince the number of pupils with special needs has been on the decrease recently, more and more of these pupils are attending comprehensive schools. Their adaptation, however, can depend mostly on the attitude of teachers and headmasters towards them. The aim of this investigation is to reveal the expression of the above-mentioned attitude and factors determining it. 215 teachers and 36 headmasters from nine basic schools of Kaunas were surveyed by means of a written survey. The analysis of the investigation data showed that most teachers had a positive attitude towards education of pupils with special needs: they are satisfied with the achievements of these pupils (59,5%) and they are sure that integration of such pupils into a comprehensive school is successful (58,5%), though agree with the opinion that this process is constantly hindered by a negative attitude of other pupils of the same age in the classroom. According to the data of the survey of headmasters, the majority of them (58,5%) indicated that the failure in the above-mentioned work is caused by a lack of teaching methodology, literature, and special equipment for handicapped children and insufficient competence of teachers. On the other hand, not all the headmasters answered the questions about education of pupils with special needs at school, and some part of them (41,5%) had doubts about the quality of knowledge of such pupils. When investigating the factors that can have an impact on teachers' attitude towards education of students with special needs, it was established that the above-mentioned attitude is related to working experience of teaching pupils with special needs and special pedagogical competence.
