Summary / Abstract:

Reikšminiai žodžiai: Žmogaus kilmė; Frazeologija; Gimtuvių papročiai; Origin of man; Phraseology; Birth customs.

ENThe study is kind of continuation of the previous research focusing on mythological lexis – the names of children’s bogeymen. Starting with traditional children’s intimidations, the author in the course of time became interested in adults’ explanations to small children about the appearance of a baby in the family, which were popular in our peasant culture. While collecting these explanations, she also accumulated the motifs of oral folklore about how childless couples acquire a son or daughter in an unusual way. Very similar themes are characteristic of etiological stories about the origin of a man. In the course of time it turned out that the unusual origin of a man is reflected in many phraseological combinations that are definitely related to the mentioned folklore tradition. The analysis of the relationship of these phraseological units with the so-called cultural context is the main objective of this paper. Language is more conservative than culture; therefore, it is a regular pattern that part of explanations for children gave start to euphemistic phraseological units that could be characterised by an unusual variety of the names of stork. Phraseological units that reflect an extraordinary origin of a man is a research object that is interesting and suitable for an ethnolinguist. Their analysis helps to form a variegated and complex picture of the old beliefs of coming of a new human being into the world. Unique information still exists in folk traditional culture, which helps to interpret many rare phraseological combinations. Not only purely linguistic methods, but also a wide cultural context are useful when exploring this issue.
