Summary / Abstract:

ENBecause of the insufficient flow of the foreign direct investments in Lithuania, the aim of the article is to evaluate and compare the tendencies of the foreign direct investments as the most substantial part of the physical capital flow that migrates in between country borders around the World and in the European Union (EU). For that purpose the last few decades of economic development and the flows of the foreign direct investments according to the regions and countries, including both developed and developing countries were chosen. The main reasons that indicate why there is a lack of foreign direct investment in Lithuania were analysed as well. The possibilities of the use of the Global Competitiveness Index were discussed and the article was based on the published scientific research analysis and synthesis; the statistical data of Lithuania, the European Union countries, Japan and US. The research has shown that when countries became more developed the foreign direct investments start to grow in those geographic parts of the country that have the potential of economic growth. The same tendencies can be seen in the developing countries. In this context, the foreign direct investments are related to the development of EU, the flow of the EU internal capital and the relocation trends, place of employment and the connection between foreign and local companies of the 15 old EU Member States and in the 10 new EU countries. According to the Global Competitiveness Index Lithuania shows potential to compete for the foreign direct investments (the economic growth is going through the transition from the second to the third phase) if it continues to encourage innovation and science-based economic development and manages to focus on the continuation of policies.
