Summary / Abstract:

Reikšminiai žodžiai: Fonema; Mišrusis dvigarsis; Sudėtinis dvigarsis; Sutaptinis dvigarsis; Skilimas į du skiemenis; Komponentų pakeitimas; Phoneme; Mixed diphthong; Compound diphthong; Complex diphthong; Splitting into two syllables; Commutation of the components.

ENThe article provides a phonological interpretation of “ie” and “uo”. Coinciding diphthongs “ie” and “uo”, as shown by their classification, are different from both compound diphthongs and vowels. By their peculiarities they are in between diphthongs and vowels. Two composite parts (three with the in-between one: “iea” and “uoa”) and the fact that they do not have short counterparts, are of changeable shift and are longer than long vowels relate them with diphthongs. The coinciding diphthongs are approximated to vowels by the merging components and phonetically and phonologically similar accents. The most prominent argument in favour of “ie” and “uo” being one-phoneme is the pronunciation of their accents (leveling of accent similarly to vowels), however this is determined by the different composition of coinciding and compound diphthongs. In most linguists’ studies the discussion regarding the phonological interpretation of “ie” and “uo” is not comprehensive, little arguments is provided for substantiation of the opinion. In dialectology it is important to ensure the accurate registration and summarization of the data of dialects first and only afterwards provide their theoretical explanation. The sounds “ie” and “uo” are different from vowels since they include two parts (three with the interim), they do not have short phonemes of the same quality and are of a changeable shift. They include two vowels, which, in part, can be replaced by other phonemes. The diphthong “uo” can be divided into two syllables. All the aforementioned arguments show that the coinciding diphthongs “ie” and “uo”, found in the common language and in all the dialects, should be considered not vowels, but diphthongs, i. e. not one phoneme, but two phonemes. Phonemes are usually considered the sounds, which cannot be divided into smaller sounds, following each other.
