ENBronius Kutavičius is one of the most significant composers in Contemporary Lithuania playing an exceptional role in Lithuanian culture. His musical compositions could be considered as a mirror of Lithuanian history. Kutavičius music renders the transformations of the Lithuanian history giving a meaning to the surrounding world of different nations and cultures. It embodies the legacy of the world’s art, culture and literature which echoes in all periods of his art. Kutavičius recalls some important moments of the life of the Lithuanian people by appealing to the understanding of currently living people. He turns to the distant, even pre-historical, past of the Lithuanian ancestors, the Balts. From there, the composer extracts the details that help to bring to surface separate aspects of modern life and to find an existing extension of one’s thoughts. During the Soviet occupation, the relevant topics touched upon the preservation of the Lithuanian existence-language, culture, traditions and identity. Thus the so-called pagan oratories, famous both in Lithuania and in the world, have been created ("The Last Pagan Rites", "The Jatvingian Stone"). Therefore, it is not incidental that Kutavičius is called the major Lithuanian composer of the 7th and the 8th decades of the 20th century. In his works, composer conveys the historical development of the Lithuanian state and occurring transformations. Here, separate episodes of the country’s history are revived. It is the pagan, royal and nobleman Lithuanian freedom, traditions rooted in the 17th century, wars, and occupations. Lithuania is rooted in all Kutavičius’ works and their context. The composer paid attention to the establishment of the city of Vilnius, closing of Vilnius University, occupations of Lithuania. Moreover, famous people are also brought back to life: the oracle Lizdeika, King Mindaugas, Duke Gediminas, writer Duke Gediminas, writers and poets Kristijonas Donelaitis, Liudvikas Rėza, Maironis, Strazdas, and the famous Lithuanian composer and painter Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis. Kutavičius gives meaning to the surrounding of the world, and other cultures. His works of all creative periods embody the heritage of world art, culture and literature. These works include a cantata "Two Birds in the Wood Bower", the text by Rabindranath Tagore (1978); "The stille Stadt", the text by Richard Dehmel (1978); "Three Sonnets by Adomas Mickevičius" (1992); a cycle of four compositions "The Gates of Jerusalem" (1991-1995): Part I Nothern Gates (1991), Part II Eastern Gates (1992), Part III Southern Gates (1994), and Part IV Western Gates (Stabat Mater) (1995); "I Say One World - My Lips Ice Over" (1996), the text by Matsuo Bash; and : "Kampf der Bäume" (The Fight of Trees) (1996) with texts by Taliesin and Llywarch. Composer follows a long creative way that extends through more than four decades. He goes through search for avant-garde novelties, birth of national and pagan thematic compositions, visit to exotic countries, updating of universal topics of time and existence. A painful history of the nation is again revived in Kutavičius’ music. Through all his works, we can feel how the pulsating of Lithuanian history and time. Under the influence of the composer, the Lithuanians are enabled to feel their national backbone and spirit. A meaningful fact is that the composer now keeps "Metai" (Years) by Kristijonas Donelaitis on his writing table. Thus the author wants to draw attention to simple but nowadays very important things like the return to the rhythm of the year of following of established eternal moral norms and behavior. The collection is started with a thoughtful story told by Kutavičius about his family, creative life, meetings with prominent figures of Lithuanian and world culture, the events of his life experienced during unrest periods of historical changes.
