Summary / Abstract:

ENThe aim of this study was to analyze the formation and manifestation of Latvian Lithuanians’ ethnic identity during the early 2000s and to formulate recommendations that would help maintain and Strengthen the Lithuanian identity and traditions. The data were collected in a field study conducted in three regions of Latvia (Courland, Semigallia, and Latgale) during 2017. In total, 34 Lithuanians and 22 Latvians living in Liepaja, Bauska, and Daugavpils cities and rural areas were interviewed. In this investigation, the ethnographic field research technique was used, involving such methods as semi-structured detailed interviews, free conversations, observation, photography, an internet-based inquiry of Latvian state and public organizations, and the analysis of Latvian mass media. The collected data were processed by applying descriptive, analytical, historical-comparative, and interpretation techniques. This paper analyzes individual and communal ethnic identity of Latvian Lithuanians and discusses the significance and the issues of Lithuanian cultural societies in Liepaja, Bauska, and Daugavpils cities. The study showed that the studied societies faced similar problems due to their narrow field of activity (exclusively musical activity): small numbers of members, the majority of which were retired, no youth involvement in the activities, and insufficient publicity of the societies and their activities. The small number of the members of Lithuanian cultural societies indicates that not all Latvian Lithuanians consider the communal preservation of ethnic identity to be of importance. However, such societies are undoubtedly needed, as they not only help to preserve ethnic identity at least in a small group of Latvian Lithuanians, but also popularize the Lithuanian culture throughout Latvia.
