Summary / Abstract:

ENThis article analyses the current folk art process and management, with the goal of determining particular aspects pertaining to the management of contemporary folk art, and give an overview of the situation from a perspective of the centre and the periphery. With the development of all of culture affected during the period of post-modernism, no reasons remained to consider contemporary folk art as a “lower form” of art. However folk art research is clearly pushed to the side. Lithuanian folk art preserved a strong traditionalism even in innovative works of a playful character, using the newest technology, which increases reciprocal interaction with professional art. The spread and educational programmes of folk art and its financing have had a huge impact on the liveliness of traditions. The decentralisation of the managing of folk art and its alienation for cultural organisers from the periphery can be evaluated in two ways: it creates an open society, strengthens democracy, and encourages the beginning of new local traditions, however with the weakened role of central state institutions supervising with their methodology, and developing and coordinating folk art life, the liveliness of folk art lessens, and the prestige and scope of events is weakened. The further expansion of folk art is now encouraged both by the periphery and the centre, however the real influence of these actions do not satisfy the needs of society and do not suit the possibilities of artists – a substantial disproportion has appeared between the need of folk art in the regions, the province and its relevance to the centre.
