Summary / Abstract:

ENCases of expulsion of Jews from Towns of Grand Duchy of Lithuania (thereinafter GDL) are known facts in historiography; however the strategies of both groups and dynamic was not analyzed. The main question is the evolution of behaviour of the Jewish community in the situation of expulsion from towns and actions of burghers in the establishing of new situation – a town without Jews. Such structure of a town’s inhabitants was understood as ideal for the burghers. For the presentation of this phenomenon I will analyze three cases from private towns of the grand duke. These towns were organized by the Magdeburg law: Troki (Trakai), Merecz (Merkinė) and Kowno (Kaunas). These cases in the context of expulsions of Jews from towns of GDL are exclusive, have special features which are not relatable for another cases. Analyzed cases are reasonable examples of the dynamic of the phenomena and the changing of behaviour of acting groups – burghers and Jews. Gradually the process of expulsion of Jews from towns and used strategies (for example, in the Kowno case it was the strong legal defending of rights to live in the town from Jews) allow us to change attitudes for this process and change the meaning of it from expulsion in the sixteenth–seventeenth centuries GDL to legally based and step-by-step accomplished eviction in the end of eighteenth century.
