Summary / Abstract:

ENIn Volume 5 of the "Privileges and Acts of Lithuanian Magdeburg Towns", 231 15th-18th c. documents are published from the Lithuanian Metrica, the books of acts of the Merkinė magistracy, the books of land courts acts of the voivodeships of Trakai and Smolensk, and other archival funds directly related both to the activities of the magistracy and the town courts, and to the issues of the everyday lives of the town dwellers (buying and selling of land and buildings, testaments, the plague, the townspeople’s fight for their rights after the 1776 abolition of self-government), as well as the the rulers’ confirmation privileges, guild regulations, tax relief after fires, and town inventory. Several documents are published from an earlier period - prior to the granting of the Magdeburg rights - which attest to the fact that Merkinė existed as a town much earlier than was documented. This is an important collection of acts of Lithuanian urban history which reflects the legal situation and change thereof of the dwellers of one of our oldest towns, and which provides considerable material for the familiarization of the cultural and economic development of 15th-18th c. towns.
