Summary / Abstract:

ENThe ancient Lithuanian drinking rite, described in historical and ethnological sources of the fourteenth-twentieth centuries, presents an elaborated rite, comprised of sacrifice to Gods (pouring of a drink on the ground and over brimming it), prayers, drinking it with special toasts and other elements. One of these elements – a drinking toast, or a wish by which gods and participants of the rite were addressed has been analysed in this article. A toast used to address (with thanks or wishes) several social addressees: 1) organisers of the rite (these could be the house masters); 2) exceptional participants of the rite (these could be the new-born babies, godparents, newlywed, departed or others); 3) the entire community in corpore; 4) each participant of the rite, drinking an individual toast to each other. On the other hand, the entire rite was meant to honour a religious addressee of the rite, a God that could reasonably be related to any god patrons of honey or mead, that is, Austėja and Perkūnas. In the drinking rite a toast was expressed in two different ways – in words and by body-language. The community members said words and wishes, shook their hands, and kissed each other. Gods were saluted by pouring down the drink on the soil or by brimming it over the glasses. The combination of a word and an act had to guarantee the success of a rite seeking the most important goal which was to unite the community members and to ensure their religious ties with the gods of the rite.
