Summary / Abstract:

Straipsnyje pristatomi XVI a. sukurti šv. ENThe essential features of the portraits of saints have always been similar. The earliest signs of the cult of saints indicate that it evolved from preservation of the memory of the dead, and icon is the result of this evolution. The evolvement of images of saints was influenced by the fact that Christianity allowed depiction of saints by way of commemoration. Such representations invite the viewer to participate in the commemoration of the person depicted. The image is intended to introduce the saint, marking the distinction between an individual who belongs to a certain historical period and a timeless saint. The transformation of a memorial image into a worshipped image depends on the personality of the dead rather than the stylistics of the image itself. This observation is supported by the earliest accounts of St. Casimir’s representations, which are reviewed in the article. The review includes Frydrych Papee’s assumption that the authentic portrait of St. Casimir might have been painted in 1481, as part of preparation for his marriage with the daughter of Emperor Frydrych III. The article presents the earliest images of St. Casimir: Zaccaria Ferreri’s print Vita and the Three-handed (Trirankis) of Vilnius Cathedral, as well as their derivatives. All the scholars concerned with the iconography of the saint were interested in the issue of the “real” portrait of St. Casimir. The earliest representations were employed as a means of establishing "authenticity". The article points out the most important historical and non-historical facts considered by the analysts.
