Summary / Abstract:

ENThe first researchers in the history of photography in Vilnius (Lucjan Uziębło, Jan Bułhak, Euzebiusz Łopaciński) made very little use of archival resources and based their findings mostly on authentic testimonies and their own observations. A significant change in the study of the history of photography in Lithuania occurred towards the end of the 20th century and in the first years of the present century. Firstly, museums began to energetically disseminate knowledge about their collections by publishing books and creating publicly accessible digital databases of museum objects. Secondly, the quality of research on the history of photography in the 19th century changed when archival resources, located not only in Lithuania but also abroad, began to be used on a larger scale. International contacts and new channels of communication led to the discovery of previously unknown photographs and photographers. Interest began to be taken not only in Vilnius, but also in the activities of photographers and ateliers in other cities and provinces of Lithuania. This contributed to the expansion of our knowledge regarding the photographers of the daguerreotype period: François Marcillac, Karol Neupert and Karol Ziegler. Books and catalogue raisonné publications appeared, containing sizable biographies and oeuvre overviews of the wet collodion period photographers: Abdon Korzon, Józef Czechowicz and photographers of the subsequent period: Benedykt Henryk Tyszkiewicz, Johann Hiksa and Stanisław Kazimierz Kossakowski. The article presents new facts concerning photographers who documented the engineering and construction enterprises in Lithuania: Antal Rorhbach, Konrad Brandel and Józef Hoffer. It also includes a brief discussion of the All-Russian Ethnographic Exhibition, which was an important event in the history of photography in the Russian Empire.
