Summary / Abstract:

Reikšminiai žodžiai: Aoristas; Asmenuotė; Baltų kalbos; Hetitai; Hetitų veiksmažodžio; Indoeuropiečių kalbos; Indoeuropiečių prokalbė; Lyginamoji kalbotyra; Slavų kalbos; Veiksmažodis; Aorist; Baltic languages; Comparative Linguistics; Conjugation; Hittite; Hittite ablaut; Indo-European language; Indo-European languages; Slavic languages; The Hittite verb conjugation theory; Verb.

ENThe book is aimed at harmonising the picture of the Proto-Indo-European verb system with the data from the Hittite and other Anatolian languages. The discovery that the Hittite language belonged to the group of Indo-European languages was a breakthrough in the entire conception of the Proto-Indo-European language. In the 20th century, the focus was mainly placed on the phonological features of the Hittite language, in particular to consonant h and its significance in developing the theory of the laryngeal. So far, the morphological gap between the Hittite and other early languages was greater than phonological differences. What the Hittite verb system lacks most is the aspect of verbal tenses recognised in the Sanskrit, Greek and Latin languages. On the other hand, the Hittite language features a novelty – hhi-conjugation – an exclusively regular conjugation class, to which nearly half of all verbs of the Hittite language belong. All repeated efforts to explain hhi-conjugation based on the classical Proto-Indo-European verb system model failed. The book provides an alternative view to the type of hi-conjugation, as to the category inherited from the Proto-Indo-European language. It is discussed in separate chapters how different hhi verb classes in the Hittite language can be related to a well-known present tense and aoristic type verbs in “classical” Indo-European languages and derived from initial forms which although grammatically mark an active action, have the endings of the finite action (hhi-conjugation). It has been the first time when most of the features of the Proto-Indo-European verb system are systematically explained in the book.
