Summary / Abstract:

Reikšminiai žodžiai: Kuršas; Kuršiai; Miniatiūriniai indai/keramika; Baltijos keramika; Vietinės gamybos keramika; Baltijos regionas; Curonia (Couronia); Curonians (Cours); Miniature pots; Vessels of indigenous types; Baltic Ware; Baltic Region.

ENThe paper analyses cremation graves of the Curonians and ceramics discovered in them, and this custom as a reflection of contacts in the Baltic region. The problem of the late Curonian cremated burial ceramics is related with the spread of the Baltic ceramics (Ostseekeramik) in the whole territory of the Balts, especially in the Merovingian period and the Viking Age. Baltic vessels and various processes linked with them caused certain changes in the Curonian burial customs. One of such changes was the spread of the local embossed ceramics, used in the 10th c. and even in the 11th c., in the Curonians' burial monuments that contained cremation graves. All these vessels found in the graves are broken intentionally. In fact, they replaced the custom of placing miniature vessels in the graves that had existed in the Curonian burial tradition from the Migration Period. These vessels may have been used as temporary urns or containers for transporting cremated bones and cerements from the place of cremation to the burial site. These vessels could have also been used for placing food for the dead during the funeral rituals, or they may indicate the wake and memorial traditions.
