Summary / Abstract:

LTRemiantis egodokumentais, publicistika, memuaristika ir neskelbtais grožinės kūrybos rankraščiais, straipsnyje apžvelgiamos Sofijos Kymantaitės-Čiurlionienės moteriškosios savivokos problemos. Čia aptariama, kaip kito socialinio buvimo moterimi supratimas. Pasitelkiant kultūros sociologijos, psichoanalizės istorinius kontekstus ir kompleksines metodologines prieigas, tiriama, kaip kurianti moteris fiksuoja kintantį savojo kūno, lytiškumo, moterystės, motinystės suvokimą. Į tyrimo lauką įtraukiami ir keli Kymantaitės-Čiurlionienės grožiniai kūriniai, detaliau moters savivokos aspektu aptariamas pirmõsios apysakos, turinčios autobiografinių bruožų, problemų laukas, savo sudėtingumu peržengiantis moterų emancipacinio judėjimo XX a. pradžioje keltus klausimus. Raktažodžiai: moterų emancipacija, kūnas, lytiškumas, eros, isterija, įsčios, motinystė.

ENSofija Kymantaitė-Čiurlionienė (1886–1958) returned to Lithuania in 1907, after her studies in Kraków, where she became acquainted with the ideas of liberal feminism. She participated in many women’s organizations, and raised the issue of their moral equality in interpersonal relations with men. In her fiction, memoirs and private correspondence, Kymantaitė-Čiurlionienė dealt with more subtle issues related to the liberalising self-awareness of women. She was concerned with aspects of female identity, the awareness of sexuality, the factors that make motherhood meaningful and the things that complicate it, such as pregnancy after a forcible sexual intercourse, the existential loneliness of women, premature widowhood, and lust. The latter is repressed by the wish for non-existence, which was a consequence of the dominant discourse of the time, which brought out the contradictions between the sexes (Otto Weininger, Nikolai Berdyaev, etc.). In analyzing the artistic work of Kymantaitė-Čiurlionienė, the article draws on Michel Foucault’s insight about the set of strategies that have historically emerged in modernity, the so-called “hysterization” of women, which highlighted sexual attractiveness, the role of the womb and childbirth in the assessment of the female body (The History of Sexuality), while treating it as an anatomical and psychic “anomaly,” which discriminated against women up to the beginning the 20th century. Kymantaitė-Čiurlionienė sought a way to overcome this predisposition, proposing the path of mystical motherhood in her short story “Joana Vaidilaitė.” She argued that the only form of freedom for her childless character, who is being treated for “hysteria” in a psychiatric hospital, is her will to create.By detaching motherhood from physical giving birth and showing that maternity can work through texts, the writer sought to inscribe her female character—and women in general—in the paradigm of cultural “immortality.” Keywords: women’s emancipation, body, sexuality, eros, hysteria, womb, motherhood.
