Summary / Abstract:

LTStraipsnyje aprašomas Vilniaus pedagoginio universiteto Lituanistikos fakulteto I-ojo kurso studentų kirčiavimo polinkis tvirtagalius dvigarsius su pirmaisiais sandais i ir u tvirtapradinti. Tyrimas atliktas remiantis kompiuterinio kirčiavimo treniruoklio duomenimis. ENThis article describes the accentuation tendency of the freshmen of the Lithuanian language faculty of the Vilnius Pedagogical University to stress the rising diphthongs with the first components i and u as the falling diphthongs. The study was conducted based on data obtained from the computer accentuation simulator. Therefore, the article analyzes accentuation, not pronunciation. The tendency to stress the first diphthong element is influenced by both standard and foreign languages. In the neighbouring linguistic environment (in Slavic languages) the syllable basis can be composed from the vowel only. This may influence students who stress a single vowel of a syllable. Since the first element of the falling diphthongs does not lengthen in the standard language, it may be difficult to identify the accent aurally based on the contrast of the rising and falling diphthongs which prevail in the dialects. The rising diphthongs are usually pronounced in a levelled tone; therefore, the students’ accentuation may be affected by the stressed syllable at the beginning of the word. The article examines prevailing tendencies and reasons for their manifestation. The author emphasizes that students’ accentuation tendencies should be studied more thoroughly.
