Summary / Abstract:

ENThis contribution presents the concept for the expansion of the Lithuanian Museum of Power Engineering, which is located at the former Vilnius Power Plant, and reformulates its mission tasks to embrace a wider domain. The new concept is designed to reflect the development of science and the application of scientific knowledge in engineering and technology in Vilnius in the past and today, which are viewed as an extremely important part of culture in general and one of the main stimuli for the development of the city. It is also aimed at the enhancement of the historical consciousness of Vilnius citizens through the involvement of the technical intelligentsia in the preservation of cultural heritage. A new pattern for the display in the museum is offered: it is suggested to expand the exhibits with resources on the history of Vilnius and to arrange them combining the chronological and thematic approaches. The focus is placed on the relationship between man and the living and working environment. The potential of the new conceptual model to reveal certain pages from the history of Vilnius, which have not been presented in other museums of the city, is demonstrated by providing a detailed description of the content for one section of the exhibitions, which is dedicated to the local municipal autonomy in trade and crafts and the traditional feasts connected to this. It is summarized that the strategically perfect location of the Lithuanian Museum of Power Engineering provides opportunities for its inclusion into the complex of the most important museums in Vilnius. The proposed concept of the Museum of Engineering might help fill in the gap of a missing Vilnius city historical museum. A large portion of the historical traditions of Vilnius remain relevant in today's life and an effective presentation of them at the museum might stimulate the development of a sense of urban consciousness.
