Summary / Abstract:

ENThe article, which is predicated on its logical theoretical thought, claims the impact of the globalization to the Lithuanian language and at the same time to the national self-awareness. The author describes the national history of Lithuania and a fussy destiny of the Lithuanian language, as well as its use and derogation, also the loss of state support. The author draws the presumptive conclusions on the derogation of the Lithuanian language in academical community and in studies and on its reflection on the society. The author states that one feature of Lithuanian national character, namely, servilism is one of the reasons of the derogation of the language. The derogation of the language is considered in a broad context of the national self-awareness blocking that determines the transformation of the spiritual image of the motherland to the geographical country context. The author explains the circumstances of the Lithuanian language usage and at the same time proposes introductory interpretations of a contemporary role of the nation, nationality and civility. The article has been finished with an appeal to the awareness of society and political structures, for it influences the usage of the Lithuanian language in the intellectual community. The author states that it is the guarantee of continuity and modernization of the Lithuanian nation. [From the publication]The spiritual basis for stability of a nation and the amassment of its state is the national self-perception, national consciousness and state patriotism. The said basis is being destroyed by the satellites of globalization, i. e. the interests of transnational capital, the mass media, ex-territorialism and supranationalism, devaluation of culture, alienation, etc.. The Lithuanian nation, which, in the course of history, lost very significant lodes of its natural culture, can hope for its future and integrity of its state only in case it consistently nurtures its language, which is valuable not only as the core of the heritage of the Indo-European culture, but also as the driver for survival of the Lithuanian nation and its statehood [...]. There emerge certain trends of reduction of use of the Lithuanian language, thus the national identity, which contributes to the contraposition of the nation to the state, mitigates the integrity of the state itself and encourages the spread of emigration oriented attitude among young people, i. e. replacing of the spiritual motherland by the geographical one. Rather than citizenship, the Lithuanian nationality, the core of which is the native language, denotes a person’s belonging to a community, amassed on the basis of not pragmatic, but spiritual values. A state, which nurtures such communities and takes care of the spiritual, and not only the geographical motherland, will be more integral and vital in the wake of the turmoil of globalization and its contribution into the commonwealth of nations and states will be more constructive. Nationality and public spirit cannot be separated from each other, they must be joined into one organic oneness, which must be wisely nurtured by the state and individual members of the society.
