Summary / Abstract:

ENBruised hatchets, made of stone are one of the earliest known and popular groups of archeological findings. The article analyzes their peculiarities in the Neman area. A big part of historical – cultural heritage is incidental archeological findings. The author suggests not denying the possibilities of interpretation of the incidental materials, and rather encourages searching for new reliable ways of their interpretation. For this purpose a “statistical – geographical” method is suggested, the essence of which is the directly proportionate relation between the territory and statistics. Having in mind that the Neman area amounts to 12.6 % of the area of Lithuania, it is likely that the number of findings of each type, found in the area, would amount to the same percentage. The prerequisites for interpretation are shaped by the difference between the actual and theoretically estimated number of findings. The strong influence of old hatchet makers in the Neman area is evidenced by a greater amount of marine hatchets of the European style. The overall overview of the spread of bruised hatchets allows for stating that intercultural forms (two-blade and European hatchets) were prevalent in the Neman area. The local types (hatchets with a long quadrangular head and Baltic marine hatchets) were found in the Neman area less frequently than in other parts of Lithuania. In his article the author expresses the opinion on the necessity of compiling a new Lithuanian archeology atlas.
