ENThis book is dedicated to the discussion of Lithuania's and other Baltic countries' historical experience during the period be tween the two World Wars. The main focus is directed to the geo political situation on the eastern shore of the Baltic Sea and the efforts of the independent states, situated there, to create a secure life for their citizens. In this book, where the issues of interna tional security are discussed, the questions of the Central-Euro pean political processes and tendencies as well as emerging threats of that time are examined, and Lithuania's diplomatic activities along with preparations for national defence analysed. These ques tions are connected with possible political and military alliances, collective security, and preservation of neutrality. The specifics of Lithuanian national security which decide the manner of strate gic defence measures are evaluated, and the defence peculiarities of towns and regions as well as the possibilities of total resistance and other matters connected with this subject are examined. Based on the principles of cultural anthropology as well as semiotics models the historical facts and episodes are deliberated upon. The results of those deliberations constitute the basis for authors' assertions that the three Baltic countries did not have any realistic chance to create a secure and self-determinant state hood. They, having fallen into the stream of geopolitical interests of Big Powers, where continuously openly and secretly manipu lated according to specially designed action scenarios. Finally, once occupied, the young XXth century states' material, cultural and intellectual potential was destroyed.
