Summary / Abstract:

ENThe text analyses the images of Our Lady of the Rosary from the 17th to the 19th centuries (visual and applied art works) from various Lithuanian churches, museums and libraries, emphasising St. Dominic’s image in the iconography of this subject. The figure of the saint is very important in this context. It is related to the legend about St. Dominic experiencing a vision in which the Mother of God gave him the rosary as an effective tool in the fight against the Albigensian heresy. This legend in the second half of the 15th century was consolidated by the theologian Alan de la Roche (c. 1428-1475). The image of St. Dominic is found in the vast majority of the different depictions of the Rosary prayer, and always with the Mother of God, to whom this prayer is exclusively dedicated. In some works, the saint is depicted as a direct participant in the legend’s events (often together with the Dominican, St. Catherine of Siena), in other works, he complements and emphasises the symbolism of the Rosary. In Lithuania, the pictures of Our Lady of the Rosary with St. Dominic and St. Catherine of Siena and of St. Dominic’s vision, illustrating the narrative of the legend, were the most common, but the artistic context of this theme is complemented by incredibly interesting, inventive, symbolic interpretations.
