ENIntertextuality is considered as the interaction between an authorís and a foreign text, the connection of one text with others. Thus, it can be stated that academic discourse is essentially intertextual, as it is based on previous research and already known information quite extensively. Ascientific text must refer to the works of other scholars, against the background of which the originality of the new text emerges. Intertextuality, as a certain phenomenon of academic culture, is usually manifested in citing, paraphrasing, or referencing. The aim of the present article is to analyse the expression of means of intertextuality in academic discourse. The study pursues to determine to what extent the expression of means of intertextuality depends on the field of science, in order to assess the tendencies of the use of means of expression and the peculiarities of academic discourse in texts of different academic fields, i.e. technical and social sciences. The conducted research showed that paraphrased citations are more frequent in the texts of both fields of science, direct quotations are less recurrent, reference examples were found only in the texts of social sciences. Non-integrated references to paraphrased citations predominate in both social and technical science texts. However, the difference between integrated and nonintegrated references is particularly evident in technical science texts. Evaluative information about the quoted author or his/her text is provided in the texts of social sciences more often than in technical texts. [From the publication]
