Summary / Abstract:

Reikšminiai žodžiai: Nuolatinis mokymasis; Karjera; Karjeros kompetencija; Mokymosi kompetencija; Nuolatinis mokymasis; Life-long learning; Career; Career competence; Learning competence.

ENCareer is the process realized in the continuously changing world of labour. Therefore, successful career depends not only on the ability of timely and proper reaction to changes, but also on the ability to foresee these changes and to prepare for them. Once obtained knowledge, skills and even documents of formal education do not guarantee life-long successful career in modern dynamic world of labour - they have to be constantly renewed, which means continuous learning in the course of career. The paper seeks to reason the importance of life-long learning in the way of career and to reveal the way students understand this importance and the process of learning itself. The applied methods of investigation: analysis of scientific literature and quantitative and qualitative content analysis. In the first part of the article the concepts of career and life-long learning are defined, the importance of learning competence as an integral part of career competence for successful career is reasoned. The second part of the article presents the methodic of the investigation of students' attitudes to career and analyzes the investigation results. The investigation results show that students list learning among top four categories that are most often related with career, however work, salary and status are considered to be of much greater importance. Other career related categories reflect wide understanding of career as way of life but limited, stereotypic psychological portrait of "career person". In most cases students consider learning as Finite and formal process and relate it with studies at university and diploma. Modern learning paradigm based understanding of learning is not very popular among students. [From the publication]
