Summary / Abstract:

ENThe learning city is characterised as a complex social and economic environment enabling individual and collective learning of its members – city dwellers (Longworth, 1999). The article is aimed at substantiating the possibilities of the expression of educational potential of websites of learning cities. The method applied is the analysis of scientific literature and documents. When developing the website of the learning city two solutions are possible: 1) it can be created as an absolutely independent website of the learning city; 2) the existing official website can be reconstructed. Common websites of a network are valued according to the characteristics of the contents, design, navigation, technology (Neuner et al., 2005; Resolution No 0480 of the Government of the Republic of Lithuania of 2003). When developing the website of the learning city all these characteristics must integrate the educational elements. Seeking to create a more exhaustive picture of the possibilities of the contents of websites of the learning city, the analysis of five learning cities (Birmingham, Ballarat, Salisbury, Dublin, Espoo) was made and presented in the article. Lithuania is regarded as the country undergoing transformation, a country of delayed development. The peculiarities of the country undergoing transformation requires that websites should clearly and understandably present the phenomenon of the learning city; they have not only to help implement the aspiration of the learning city but also make these processes more active so that changes would take place smoothly and rapidly.
