Locating Baltic Orthodoxy in scholarship

Baltic Orthodoxy: people, places, practices. P. 15-54.. Tartu : University of Tartu Press, 2025
Summary / Abstract:

ENOrthodoxy in the Baltic region is striking in both its visibility and its variety. Onion domes give way to pointed tent-like spires, while Seto women in colourful skirts and gleaming silver neckpieces cross paths with black-robed Orthodox nuns. Services are conducted not only in Old Church Slavonic, but also in local languages (Estonian, Latvian, Finnish, Lithuanian), and the music ranges from meditative monophonic chants to rich four-part harmonies. The Orthodox tradition sees itself as rooted in an ancient past stretching back to Byzantium. This tradition lives on not just in belief, but also in buildings, rituals, melodies, and icons. To understand Orthodoxy in the present, one must engage with its past – and with how that past is remembered, retold, and sometimes contested. As in all religious traditions, the stories the Orthodox tell about their history are shaped to teach moral lessons, affirm identity, and off er meaning. These stories may blend sacred narrative with selective historical memory. And especially in moments of disagreement or competition over legitimacy, doctrine, or representation, history can become a battleground. In such moments, certain voices get lost: the voices of ordinary believers, of communities on the margins, and above all, of women. [p. 15].
