Summary / Abstract:

ENSince the times of John Casimir Vasa, the political activity of women in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth has been systematically growing. In relation to the period of Stanisław August’s reign, historians drew attention to their special role in the Bar Confederation. After the first partition of Poland, we also have numerous examples of women’s influence on the public life of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. In the years 1779–1780, Anna Tyszkiewicz née Pociej and Aleksandra Ogińska née Czartoryska played a significant role in combating the influence of the treasurer Antoni Tyzenhauz, the previous leader of the Lithuanian regalists. In the 1780s, Anna Tyszkiewicz and Elżbieta Sapieha née Branicka had political influence in several counties of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The circle of women actively participating in public life was not limited only to the representatives of the female Lithuanian magnates. Such example was Elżbieta Wygonowska née Tarkowska, widow of the chamberlain (podkomorzy) of Brest-Litovsk. She had significant influence in the Brest-Litovsk district and her recommendations regarding the appointment of local offices were taken into account by King Stanisław August Poniatowski. A comparison of the situation of women in the Crown and in Lithuania indicates that they played a greater role in political life in areas where Lithuanian law was in force.
